Demands
1) We demand transparency and consistency from ISS as well as promptness. There has been confusion and misinformation spread that does not allow students to make the best choice suited to their unique situations.
> An immigrant/international student hotline and email should be made available for students to get answers and advising on their options. Students have been contacting ISS and receiving slow and inconsistent responses. There is a lot of confusion on what students’ options are and students deserve to have this made clear.
> The University’s requirements to comply with ICE should be made absolutely clear, in terms of in which circumstances the university will comply in sharing personal information. Provide international and undocumented students with a succinct definition.
> ISS should be giving consistent updates, and the inactivity of their social media accounts (that we observed between May 19 and July 9th) should not be repeated especially during stressful periods.
2) More options and flexibility for international students.
> Students not currently in the US should be able to keep their visas. Students within the US who do not want to risk their health by exposing themselves to campus should be able to keep their visas. The modifications are somewhat vague especially when it comes to the hybrid method, therefore with a little bit of creativity the University should be able to create viable options for students to remain in the US and/or keep their visas. Faculty have already stepped up to offer students “in-person” independent study. The university should back and encourage these efforts, within the allowances of the modifications.
> Start creating plans and options for if the campus were forced to shut down mid semester as it was last spring, and similar plans should be made in preparation for Spring 2021.
3) Continue to fight publicly and politically for your students.
> Show up for the International and undocumented community. Listen to their needs as students and as humans and then act on those needs. Give support where it is needed.
